Taxes

In the past 5 semesters of my experience in highschool, I've never had such a horrid teacher.

Choose wisely

Today we were required to make a part of our cash receipt program where it gets the information from a file and revises it and writes it to another file. It took a bit of time to get used to but I think I know how to get it done now.

Reflect

Today we got back the test we did on Friday.
I don't even remember the last time I failed a test in ANY of my classes in high school, and I completely failed this one. From what I heard of in class, only about 3 people actually passed the quiz, never mind if they did well or not.
On Friday I thought the test was hard, but I thought I'd get around a 70 or something. I didn't.
This pretty astonishing.

Friday, April 15, 2011

That wasn't THAT hard.

The test today wasn't as incomprehensible as I thought it would be, but it was still very difficult. I have a feeling I passed it with about a 70%. I feel I do a lot better on tests when I know what they're about.

Test D:

We were supposed to have a test today but it got moved to Friday. I am a little nervous for the test because I don't really know what to study for.

Array, a drop of golden sun

Today we learned about arrays in a giant note. This would hopefully help organize my variables so much. No more using variable1 variable2 variable 3 :\

Tuesday, April 12, 2011

Simple isn't so simple

Today we were told to make a simple object class. The assignment isn't THAT hard because the older assignments we did helped with the structure, but I'm still a bit hazy with some points.

Monday, April 11, 2011

Enough of your input

Today we have reached the deadline for doing the Input assignments. I don't think this was a realistic deadline because it takes a while to figure out how to do a program and then do it and fix up all your mistakes.

Global Youth Conference

Today I missed the ICS period because of the Global Youth Conference. When I consulted my friends, they told me we just continued working on the input/output assignments, so I shall continue as well.

Double trouble

Today I made all the changes needed for my class, including the tokenizer part, and then I made the double assignment too. It was pretty easy, actually. Though I'm unsure about the new assignment as to what it means.

Take it from the top

Today I finished my two digit calculator class, but during the consultation Mr. Arkin told me I had to make the program read from one line instead of the two I already programmed it to do, so I now have to use an entire different method. Hopefully this will be resolved soon.

Doo-wop!

Today we spent the class learning about if statements and loops. It was actually not that much of a jump from turing syntax. The note was clear and understandable, and I learned a lot.

Monday, March 28, 2011

Thanks for the input

We learned how to get input from users in a note today! I've been waiting for that quite some time.
Though it's a bit tricky, and I don't know all of it, I'm still pretty happy.
It seemed so much easier to do all of this stuff in Turing.

Fatal Error

Today we discovered a really major error we made in our tester. (Well, we didn't really even have to make a tester, but anyways) We accidentally created variables in the wrong classes, and it diverted our program from the start. Luckily we found it out and are now on the right track.
And apparently Mr. Arkin has a bone to pick with me.

Boolean!

Today we discovered how hard it was dealing with boolean methods. We discovered that the original boolean question, which was if someone was a minor or major, was very hard to do so we changed it into a string. Then came the trouble with strings that we're still getting through.

Wednesday, March 23, 2011

Trial and error

We have started trying our class out with the tester. We got a lot of problems which were corrected as we basically taught ourselves how to program it.
I also got a detention today that I don't deserve at all.

Class tester

Today we wrapped up our student class to the best of our abilities and tried to make a tester. This was all extremely difficult to us due to lack of knowledge of Java. My group and I were amazed and awed at how Elias and his group could get their code done seemingly without confusion.

Monday, March 21, 2011

Code-off

Mr. Arkin set us up on a java code off to make our own class. It was kind of exhilerating because I expected to not know how to do anything, but I was actually able to do many things. We didn't completely finish the class, but we did a lot more than I expected, due to our lack of java knowledge.

MARCH BREAKKKKKKK :D

Today was the final day before March break. Besides my excitement and joy, I managed to clear up most of the problems I had with the enhanced calculator thanks to Mr. Arkin. I hope to finish the enhanced calculator very soon.

Thursday, March 10, 2011

Upgrade

Today we finally finished off everyone's calculator class. I was kind of surprised to see that people still weren't done the calculator because I finished it a day or two ago and I thought I had a lot of trouble. Enhanced calculator doesn't seem too hard, though. A few methods really confused me.

First Absence

Today was the first time Mr. Arkin has been absent so far. We worked for half the period, then gave ourselves some free time to relax.

Tuesday, March 8, 2011

Calculator Class

Today we completed a class that the grade 12 class finished just a couple of days ago! I was pretty impressed with how close our work is with theirs, though it is a bit tough keeping behind them when they have so much more knowledge than us.

Friday, March 4, 2011

Purse is done!

Today I finally finished the Purse code. I had a little trouble with it in the beggining because I was confused at if the string was an object or a class.
We also took a note informing us about datatypes and other things which made Java a lot clearer.

Thursday, March 3, 2011

Purse

Today we almost wrapped up the purse assignment. Mr. Arkin showed us a way to test if our Purse class works with another tester class. I still haven't gotten my code compiled properly, but hopefully by tomorrow I'll be done.

Alright, getting lost again

I'm losing my confidence in this Java stuff again. It seems so complicated! I wonder how much of a grip on it I'll have by mid semester.

Also, I hope we have sufficient time to work on our other assignment.

Video killed the computer science star

We finally got our first group project! Okay, I'm not usually excited for projects, but I LOVE projects that require us to make a video. Right off the bat we got started and laid down the plot and got really good ideas going. We gave everyone their assigned roles and got down to business pretty fast. I hope this project will be as fun as I'm imagining it to be right now.

Java basics

Today we learned a bit about the basic structure of Java. It was pretty helpful because it gave me more insight to how Java works and how it's different from Turing. I hope to learn a lot more about Java and become good at it enough to program without referring to my notebook every few seconds.

First field trip since grade nine T_T

So today we went on a field trip to York university to see presentations about computer science and computer engineering.

The first presentation was just bad. My friends and I only understood about ONE slide out of 57 that he said, and his voice wasn't very interesting either. His hairstyle was, though. :P

The second presentation was actually pretty cool, and kind of made me want to go to York. It was about how students of York put in spare time for a big contest for a Mars rover.

The third was the most fun. We did a demo on hacking and we got to hack each others computers and it was totally a blast.

The fourth was interesting, but dragged on for a very long time, losing my attention. It was about how computers are used in surgery. The professor said it would take 30 to 40 minutes but it took almost an hour.

I have to admit, though, that my favourite parts of the day were the bus rides. Man, adventuring to a place you've never been to with 4 people just as immature as you are is a hell of a lot of fun.

Numbers!

Today we learned how to write a program for a purse or a wallet. You tell it how many dimes, nickels, and quarters you want to put in and it says how many it has. By doing this we learned how to do math related stuff in Java, like a calculator or something. It was pretty interesting, and now I at least know how to program something.

More Java

Today we took a note that took the entire class. I believe it was the longest note we've taken so far. I'm happy that I actually understood some of it, instead of the whole thing flying by my head like Mr. Arkin had said. I hope this Java thing will become a lot simpler to me with practice.

I'm pretty excited about the trip on Friday, though getting there will be tough. Oh well, I'm all for adventures.

JAVA

Today we finally started Java! I've waited to start this for a long time. Finally... a programming method that I can get somewhere with.

Although I have to be honest, I didn't understand too much of what went on today. I guess that we weren't supposed to anyway, right? Eh, I hope this stuff makes sense to me later on. Can't wait till I code the next Runescape. (KIDDING, GOSH.)

Crunchtime!

I didn't realize there was an actual marking scheme and rubric for this assignment, so I didn't bother actually posting an autobiography and only focused on having a site run properly. I guess I'll own up to my mistakes and spend the entire weekend on this.

I hope we still get an extra period on Tuesday though, because I just have to put my files in the proper folders and upload it with FileZilla.

Wednesday, February 16, 2011

Page is looking more like a page

Today my page actually had useful information for a change. My assignment is near it's finishing.

Today we also got confirmation of the trip to York. I'm a little worried about how I'll get there, though.

Tuesday, February 15, 2011

Validation!

I was really worried about the validation symbols in the beginning, but after I realized how easy it was I was very relieved. All I really had to do was copy and paste, and then input the images.

I had a significant amount of trouble validating my CSS and HTML, though. I had to recheck it many many times, but in the end I finally got it. It turned out I still mixed up the head/body format.

My site is up, and colourful!

I finally found out the reason my colours weren't working for my css code. It was because instead of putting "stylesheet" I put "format". Luckily the BOSS, Nadeem, corrected me.

I'm also very happy that the FTP client is working perfectly now. I updated my site about 3 times today and I didn't have problems at any time.

I am kind of hoping that soon we'll stop focusing on websites and do other things, because websites don't interest me all too much.

Friday, February 11, 2011

Day 6

Today we learned how to do css formatting. It didn’t seem too hard, but I had a little trouble with how to put CSS into my html code. But luckily my friend Nadeem has a lot of experience with this and told me how to do it. GIVE HIM BONUS MARKS.

Day 5 of ICS

Today I finally got my ftp server to work. I had a bit of difficulty with it today too, but I figured out it was a problem with inserting the port. Although I transferred the file using filezilla, I have to do it again tomorrow because I updated my code so the second page would have a link to the first page.

I also discussed the friday dj thing with Mr Arkin today, but I doubt I’ll volunteer until I see how someone else runs it.

Tuesday, February 8, 2011

Day 4

Today we finally figured out what was wrong with the FTP program. Now that the problem’s solved, I’m hoping to get my site up and running very soon.

Monday, February 7, 2011

Day 3 of ICS

Today I was kind of disappointed that I didn’t get to do the FTP assignment. I hope to do it early tomorrow, because I am kind of worried about not getting it done.

However, I am happy that I’m pretty used to making simple html codes for web pages now. Despite the tardiness on the FTP assignment, I think I’m doing alright progressing in this course.

HTML code for websites

Today in class I basically learned how to make a simple layout for a website. Before we started taking notes, I thought this would be really complicated and very hard to get the concept of, because I’ve never done this kind of thing before, but it turned out to be very simple. The code was much like the simple Turing codes I was familiar with, and it turned out to be a breeze.

Though my code works on mozilla firefox, the HTML code validator is giving me a bit of trouble. I guess I’ll get help from my friend on this, or simply ask Mr. Arkin on Monday.

First day of ICS

I’m actually pretty proud of myself that today I just sat down and did all the required things to do without getting distracted. I’m hoping if I keep this up, I’ll do very well in this course.

I hear ICS is a very tough course, but I’m actually looking forward to it after today. The environment seemed serious but interesting, and I think this course will be hard, but worth it.
